About Santa Margarita Ranch House

he original, single-story, eighteen-room ranch house, constructed in 1841 (recorded in Forster vs Pico court documents) served as quarters for Camp Pendleton’s commanding officers until 2007. Within the ranch house, a verandah encircles a square internal courtyard with a central fountain surrounded by flowering herbaceous plants. planting beds, with roses and other flowering shrubs, are located at the four corners of the courtyard. Encompassing little more than twenty acres within a valley, the complex also contains a bunk house and small chapel (previously part of a winery, ca.1810). Bounded by the large Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton to the southwest and a four-acre corral to the northwest, the site’s extensive sloping lawns are interspersed with sweet-olive hedgerows, cacti, palms and Engelmann Oaks. The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The Mechanized Museum

Located in Building 2612 on Vandegrift Blvd, the Marine Corps Mechanized Museum contains working Marine Corps transport and battle vehicles and interprets the history of Marine Corps vehicular usage from World War I (WW I) to present day.

The building itself is an important piece of Base history, as it was the terminal building for the railroads that serviced the base shortly after its purchase in 1942.  Many Marines arrived at Camp Pendleton at this terminal building to begin their training for World War II (WW II) and Korean War battlefields.
